About Us

The Coloured Cube is on a mission – to change the way society perceives art and creative thinking; to show its value in problem solving in areas completely unrelated to this industry and to offer unique solutions and real engagement with people. South Africa has incredible people, talent and a wealth of culture. Sadly this sector is largely untapped by other industries and we want to change that benefiting both the client and the creative sector!

About Us

The Coloured Cube was started in 2014 in a small flat in Malvern. Frustrated by the artworld and its difficulties relating to funding, lack of work opportunities and the silos which exist, the founder, Mariapaola, named the company The Coloured Cube so she would never forget the initial driver and motivator – ‘to add colour to the white cube’. To rattle the traditional ways in which we experience art and creativity and to look for contemporary and relevant methods to engage with a South African audience. With little idea of how to do this the small Coloured Cube team set out to push their ideas and approaches project by project with an openness to experimentation, collaboration and sometimes failure, which always leads to new solutions.

Three years on and The Coloured Cube has moved into a large workshop/maker space on Main Reef Road in Benrose. We have a team of passionate, forward thinking and hard working employees, as well as many wonderful collaborators and creatives we work with. 2018 and the Creative Co-Lab is making new partnerships and collaborations. We are now part of the SA Maker Collective, and in stage 2 of the Our City, Our Block project with the Johannesburg Development Agency. This project brings together a range of creatives, businesses and property developers from the area with the intention being to create a new approach to connecting with one another – through the love of making! As we expand the Creative Co-Lab we continue with a range of projects from science exhibits, curating, furniture making and artwork.
